Wingate – John Kell, 76 Rt 1, former
representative of the Indiana State Legislature, died in Community Hospital,
Williamsport, at 4:40 a.m. today. He had been a patient two weeks and in ill
health two years. Born at Attica, he was a lifelong resident of Fountain County
and attended Attica HS. He was married
in 1923 at Covington to Beatrice Pool and she survives. Mr. Kell had farmed
near Hillsboro and Newtown, retiring in 1956.
He was Richland Township Trustee from 1947-1954 and served one term as
state representative. After retiring from farming he was associated with
Indiana Bell Telephone Co. He was a
member of First United Methodist Church of Newtown, Masonic Lodge 295, and
Eastern Star Chapter 282. Surviving with
the widow are two daughters, Mrs. Lawrence (Emma Jean) Kirkpatrick of Newtown
and Mrs. Henry (Helen Louise) McLain of Anderson and one sister, Mrs. Rhurie

A former Indiana State Representative, John Kell, 76, who resided north of Newtown on S.R. 341, died Monday (May 10, 1976)in Community Hospital in Williamsport. He had been ill two years and a patient the past two weeks. Born Dec. 17, 1899, in Attica, he was the son of Charles and Ella Chezen Kell. On Jan. 14, 1923, in Covington, he married Beatrice Pool, who survives. He attended Attica High, began farming near Hillsboro in 1923. He moved to Newtown in 1934. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Newtown, Masonic Lodge 295, and Order of Eastern Star Chapter 282. Mr. Kell had served as Richland Township trustee from 1947 to 1954, and then served a term as a state legislator. He retired from farming in 1956 and then worked for Indiana Bell Telephone from 1956 to 1959. Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Lawrence (Emma Jean) Kirkpatrick of Newtown and Mrs. Henry (Helen Louise) McLain of Anderson; a sister, Mrs. Rhurie Small of Waynetown; and six grandchildren and a great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by two sons, John B, and Jerry Lee; a sister, Mrs. Bernice Hughes and two brothers, Clarence and Harry. Services at the Dale Maus funeral Home with the Rev. Don Watson and the Rev. William Blessing officiating. Burial in Riverside Cemetery at Attica. The family has requested that any memorials be in the form of contributions to a memorial fund at the First United Methodist Church of Newtown.
